Mortgages in BrazilBrazil has only recently been able to offer mortgages to its citizens in an attempt to make housing more affordable to more people. Whilst this is demonstrative of a stable growth economy, it remains a fact that the financial products market is still somewhat immature. Unfortunately, at the moment, mortgages are not currently available to foreigners in Brazil. The banks and other providers are constantly improving their products to keep up with the market demand, and it is expected that in the very near future they will be able to offer mortgages to non residents.![]() This does not mean that you cannot obtain financing for a property in Brazil. There are many developers who offer very affordable payment terms, with for example, instalments paid over 5 years, in some cases. It is worthwhile speaking with the developer and a local financial advisor to find out what payment options are available. Alternatively, if you own a property elsewhere, such as the UK, you may be able to realise either a cash lump sum or regular income through an equity release scheme. This is basically borrowing against the value (or equity) of your property and depending upon your circumstances can be an effective means of raising finance. Equity release is not always suitable for everyone, and each case must be assessed on its own merits. We would strongly recommend discussing such a scheme with an independent financial advisor before going ahead. |
