Natural Assets of EgyptEgypt, located between Asia, Europe and Africa and with a population of over 80 million, is in the top 15 largest country in terms of population and spanning an area of 1 million square kilometres, is the 30th largest country in the world. The Egyptian population is concentrated along the Nile Valley and Delta due to the aridity of the climate which means that almost the entire population uses only just over 5% of the total land area of the country.![]() Egypt is bordered by Libya, Sudan and the Mediterranean Sea with extensive coastal borders to the Red Sea. Egypt has five thousand years of recorded history and was one of the earliest civilizations and influenced many later cultures of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. After the age of the Pharaohs, Egypt was influenced by Greece, Christianity and Islamic culture. Interestingly, modern western culture, having originally been influenced by Egypt, now returns to interact with modern Egyptian culture. The capital of Egypt is Cairo which is also Africa’s largest city and which is known as a centre of trade, civilization and scholarship. An interesting fact is that Egypt has the highest number of Nobel Laureates in Africa and the Arab World. Some major international organisations have been and continue to be headed by Egyptian born politicians. Ancient Egyptian architecture extends over a minimum of ten thousand years, yet possibly the most easily recognised landmarks of Egypt are the Pyramids at Giza which are among the largest constructions ever built and potentially the strongest and most permanent symbols of Ancient Egyptian civilization. The Pyramids at Giza, albeit the most renowned are merely a small fraction of what scholars believe to be as many as 111 pyramids still in existence in Egypt. Most of these were built either during the 3rd millennium BC or between the first and second millennium BC. Despite the already tremendous contribution to world cultural heritage, Egypt is not resting on its laurels, with the “World’s top archaeological discovery of 2006” having been made in Egypt. The Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt announced, on February the 9th 2006 that a new tomb had been discovered in the Valley of the Kings. This discovery was named the “World top archaeological discovery of 2006” by the American periodical “Archaeology”. This is the first tomb to be excavated in the Vally of Kings in the last 84 years, since the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The word “paper” comes from the greek term for “papyrus”, the ancient Egyptian writing material which produced as early as 3000 BC in Egypt and sold to ancient Greece and Rome. The cuisine of Egypt has its roots in so many different cultures which results in an enormous variety of ingredients and cooking techniques, mixing all of the traditions which have influenced the art throughout the country. Due to its location between Africa and Asia, there are obvious influences from either continent. |
