Political Factors in EgyptEgypt’s government, under President Mubarek, has worked hard over the last three years to pick up the pace with regards to reforms which aim to boost higher economic growth and reduce unemployment. A wide spectrum of reforms whose goal was the modernisation of the government and promoting private sector activity were implemented.![]() Until recently, the President of Egypt was elected by parliament however a constitutional amendment approved in a referendum in May 2005 paved the way for the first multi-candidate Presidential elections. President Mubarek announced this change implemented by his government in early 2005 and in the elections in September 2005, President Mubarek once again was re-elected, having 88% of the votes. Egypt is a semi-presidential republic whereby the executive power is theoretically divided between the Prime Minister and the President however in actuality the President is “de facto” both head of state and head of government. |
