Natural Assets of ItalyWith a population of over 59 million inhabitants, Italy is the 23rd largest country in terms of population, close to the UK and South Africa however with regards to size, with just over 300 thousand km2 it is comparable to countries like Oman or the Philippines.![]() Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia and is located in the heart of Meditteranean. The historical and cultural influence of Italy in the modern world is undisputed, with most historians agreeing that the Renaissance originated in Florence in the late 13th century. Possibly Italy’s greatest cultural achievement and one of the reasons for which it is internationally renowned stems from it’s creative population. Artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Boticelli, to name but a few give testament to the extraordinary artistic heritage of this wonderful country. Another reason for Italy being so renowned is the contribution of it’s scientists to global science and discoveries. While Leonardo da Vinci was not only one of (if not “the”) most well known artists ever, he was also credited with inventions, studies into anatomy and engineering which would only become understood many hundreds of years after his death. Other very notable scientists who are automatically associated with Italy are Fibonacci, Lagrange and of course Galileo Galilei. There are 41 world heritage sites in Italy, amongst which are counted four cities and seven more city centres. Italy is the only European country which can claim to host one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the colloseum in Rome. It is no surprise that so many renowned artists originated in italy when one takes into consideration the natural beauty of the landscape and the architecture, with breathtaking lakes, mountainous ranges, virtually unspoilt beaches and national parks seconded only by the architecture prominent in cities such as Naples, Venice and Rome. Yet another major attraction in Italy is the diversity and inventiveness of the National cuisine. Perhaps the most well known of all of the Italian cuisine are the pasta dishes such traditionally associated with the country, however that is only the tip of a multifaceted iceberg of tastes and sensations. Risotto’s, polenta, ossobuco, minestrone, pesto are but a few of the more well known. Numerous cheeses to delight the taste buds, such as provola, buffalo mozzarella, fontina, parmesan and caprino all originate in Italy. There is a variety of olive oils and vinegars too varied to enumerate, suffice it to say that several renowned chefs around the world will use nothing but the finest Italian oils and vinegars in their culinary art. Another of Italy’s contributions to world cuisine are amongst the most expensive food product available and come in the form of small funghi or tubers. The average price between 2004 and 2005 for one kilo of these “white truffles” was £ 1100 with the peak for the season in January 2004 at a price of £ 2000 per kilo. |
