Healthcare in MalaysiaWith regards to Healthcare in Malaysia, both the private and the public sectors play very important roles, with about 80% of the healthcare service provided by the public sector. The public sector which is heavily subsidised, focuses not only on rehabilitative and curative care but also healthcare promotion and is considered one of the best in the region. The private sector received no subsidizing and works on a rehabilitative and curative pay-for-service basis. Doctors are required to work for public hospitals for three years however there is still a shortage in the medical labour pool, particularly with regards to highly trained specialists which leads to some specialised treatment only being available in large cities. Healthcare expenditure in 1990 were close to RM 1.8 billion (approx 375 million Euros – just under 260 million GBP) however by 1997 this figure had risen to RM 3.4 billion (just over 700 million Euros and just under 485 million GBP) and in 2003 this figure was reported at RM 7.55 billion (over 1.5 billion Euros and over 1 billion GBP). These figures are expected to double by 2018. Investment in the private sector has increased exponentially in Malaysia, with about 24% of the total healthcare expenditure in the 1980’s originating from the private sector. In the year 2000, the share of the private sector in the healthcare expenditure was estimated at close to 40%. |
