Banking in MoroccoIn July 1993, new legislation for the Banking sector encompassed finance companies and other credit institutions to determine exactly what kind of transactions those institutions can undertake. This new legislation also created a national council of surveys and cash as well as a credit institution committee. The Moroccan banking system compares to the banking system in France whereby a Central Bank operates together with about fifteen other commercial banks which provide a comprehensive range of financial services, with financing provided by quasi-state and private institutions. The regulations of the banking industry in Morocco are strictly enforced by the Central Bank with regards to liquidity, solvency, minimum capital requirements and established minimum and maximum legal lending ratios. Credit maximums were replaced in 1991 with changes in reserve requirements and access restrictions to the Central Bank rediscount window. The legal lending limit for credit guaranteed by OECD-based banks was recently increased to five times its original limit. |
