Healthcare in Morocco

If you are planning to go to Morocco there is no need to have any special vaccination, however one thing to keep in mind is that the latest medical technology is not necessarily one of the things you will be assured of finding in every clinic or hospital. Outside of the main cities and towns, hospitals and clinics can be quite basic when compared to the ones in most western countries. Emergencies will be treated free, but there are also cases where foreigners will have to pay for healthcare in Morocco like overnight stays, no matter if the hospital is private or state so, the best piece of advice is to have a good travel and medical insurance to be fully covered during your stay in the country just in case something happens.

Healthcare in Morocco

In 2005, a universal health insurance scheme was implemented, with the goal of becoming fully operational during 2006. During the first stage of the project, around 10 million more people would be covered by the scheme than in prior years, equivalent to about 34% of the population, with up to 50% of the population covered by the subsequent implementation of the second stage. Whereas in 1999 the expenditure on healthcare by the Morrocon government was around $ 400 million whereas by 2005 this had increased to over $ 700 million by 2005.

With regards to socio-economic goals, one of the main priorities for the government of King Mohammed VI is the reform of the country’s health sector. There is, however, still a major divide with regards to accessibility to both products and services when comparing rural and urban locations.
