Introduction to MoroccoMorocco, which is known officially as the Kingdom of Morocco is a country located in the North of Africa with a total population of over 33 million. One of its main beauties is the coast on the Atlantic Ocean reaching past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. If we talk about the rest of the frontiers, we have to say that Morocco has international borders with Spain to the North (water border with the Strait of Gibraltar), Mauritania to the South and Algeria to the east. The only African country which is not a member of the African Union is Morocco, but it belongs to the Arab League, the Francophone, Arab Maghreb Union, Mediterranean Dialogue Group, one of the NATO allies of the United States or to the Group of 77 for example. The word Morocco comes from the word Mur-Akush which is Amazigh and means Land of God. “The Western Kingdom” is the full Arabic name of Morocco if we translate it, Al-Mamlaka al-Maghribiya. In order to differentiate Morocco from the Maghreb, historians used to call the country Al Maghrib al Aqsá whose translation could be “The Furthest West”. Finally, the name Morocco is derived from the name of the former capital of the country, Marrakech. |
