Healthcare in TurkeyThere is a national plan for healthcare insurance in Turkey which is administered, like in many other countries, by the Ministry of Health. You will find plenty of hospitals and clinics un rural areas, which are totally free, the problem is that this concentration is just in these urban areas, because there is a lack of hospitals and clinics in some rural areas, like those in eastern Anatolia. Private health care is readily available in large cities. People who can afford to do so tend to consult physicians in private practice and seek treatment in private hospitals.![]() Retirement in Turkey is not covered by a national social security system, having the same situation with unemployment compensation or payments for conditions that disable for working. Civil servants are covered by a retirement system as well as career military personnel and workers in state-owned companies. Some private companies have also established pension plans for their workers. All such schemes together, however, cover less than half of the country’s total labour force. The main centres are well served with hospitals some of which have direct agreements with BUPA. There are private clinics in the tourist areas of Bodrum, Antalya and Marmaris. Pharmacies are open from 9.00 to 19.00hrs from Monday to Saturday and there is usually an emergency pharmacy in each area. If you are planning to go to Turkey, we recommend you ask your doctor in case you should need some special care before leaving. There is very low risk from Avian Flu, but the best you can do is avoiding visiting live animal markets, poultry farms and other places where you may come into close contact with domestic, caged or wild birds; ensure poultry and egg dishes are thoroughly cooked. |
