There are around 8700 kilometres in the vast network of the Turkish State Railways, connecting many of the main cities. You will find modern trains and they may include couchettes, restaurants, and lounge cars offering first and second class service.

A popular way to go from one place to another in Turkey is the bus travel and, as it is so popular, you will find links to all the cities by this service. They are run by private bus companies and coaches depart from city bus stations or the town centre in smaller regions.

In all cities around Turkey, you will find many yellow taxis and you will have to pay according to the distance travelled, which is shown on the meter. There is also a special service in Turkey called Dolmus, which some kind of shared taxi following certain routes and visible by a yellow band. It is like a bus, because each passenger pays according to the distance travelled and can get off at specific stops. It is clearly cheaper than taxis and its fares are fixed. The 'dolmus' serve large cities and will go to suburbs, airports and often to neighbouring towns. This is a very practical means of transport and cheaper than a privately hired taxi.

There are around 8 400 Km of coastline in Turkey and we will be able to find a total of 15 principal state-owned ports. The main ports are Haydarpasa (Istanbul), Samsun, Izmir, Mersin, Trabzon and Iskenderun and run extensive passenger ferry services.
